Eliminate seasonal affective disorder for good

Seasonal affective disorder (or SAD) is a weather dependent type of clinical depression. I already on their way in the fall we could have a look at this debilitating emotional disorder. The cornerstone of emotional and mental stability emotional, which describes how well according to the daily stresses personal interactions and the physical environment.

Weather often affects moods of people. This has much to do with the amount of sunlight during the day. A rainy and cloudy days can make us feel a little sad, but this should not be confused with seasonal affective disorder. Some people are very vulnerable to a type of depression with a seasonal pattern. It usually starts in late autumn and are not quiet until early spring. There is a light version of sad that people often refer to as "the winter blues." SAD is much more debilitating than occasional winter blues.

Seasonal affective disorder is a condition known for over 150 years, but was ultimately labeled a disorder in the 1980's. Many people with SAD may not be aware that there is still very effective and help out there.

SAD can be a serious condition debilitating, preventing patients to function normally. It can affect your personal and professional lives and severely limit their potential. It is important to know the symptoms and know there is treatment to help people with SAD live a productive year life all year.

Symptoms

SAD is difficult to diagnose because many symptoms are similar to those of other types of mental illness. In general, if you feel you have the symptoms recur two winters followed it is likely that SAD and should consult a professional.

  • change in appetite, especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods
  • weight gain
  • decreased energy
  • fatigability of the difficulty in falling asleep concentration
  • irritability
  • avoidance of social situations
  • feelings of anxiety and despair

The symptoms usually go away sadness when the time spring arrives.

How is SAD

People with mild symptoms of this disorder can be very additional benefit of sunlight. Getting outside during the peak hours of sunlight for 20-30 minutes a day is recommended. What helped me when I discovered I was suffering from SAD in 2007 was a "SAD Light" or a picture of light therapy. I use it in the morning for 20 minutes, and often at work during my lunch hour for 15-20 minutes. I can not even tell you how much of a difference this made for me. It really was like finding the magic cure. However, this does not work for everyone. It is a good first step but must be active and eat well to maintain the physical control. For those who are most seriously affected your doctor may prescribe antidepressant medications to help pass the winter.

Increased exposure to light, control your diet, sleep patterns and exercise levels are important first steps. For those who are severely affected, the development of a treatment plan with a health care professional consisting of light therapy, medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy may also be necessary.
