How to understand "Web Hosting Package Features
The options available with a web hosting package are very broad, and can be confusing to understand - especially since the options are presented in a number of ways, and condensed in various ways, while the purchase of a package online. I hope to give a breakdown of the categories of these characteristics are divided into and help you focus on features that are important to you.
Break characteristics down into 10 categories, and discuss the status of one to give a firm understanding of the options and make an informed buying decision.
10 Categories Web Hosting Package Features
- Operating Systems
- Web Server
- Band width
- Disk Space
- Domains
- FTP
- Database
- Control Group
- Applications / Programming
1. Operating Systems
The base operating system is the software that runs on the host. Manages the physical server hardware and attempts to optimize RAM memory usage, network disk space, and CPU for applications that reach the machine. The underlying operating system need not be the same as the desktop or even the operating system you use to develop your website. In fact, because most management functions to be conducted through a web interface, it is possible you never know or care what operating system the server is.
The dominant operating systems are going shopping for a web hosting service are Windows and UNIX. With Windows you will see the versions available, such as Server 2003 or Server 2008 and UNIX you will see many brands of Linux, usually CentOS, Debian, RedHat or election. Between UNIX and Windows is an important decision, and involves a lot of variables, but in the end simply means deciding whether to build your website technology open source or Microsoft technology. A more complete report of the election is available in www.HostGraphs.com in the How is about this subject.
Research the application to use or run on your website and check if all requirements are met Microsoft technology (database MSSQL, MS Access database, ASP, ASP.Net). Attention! no compelling reason to use Windows, UNIX, then most likely be a better choice for you. Running UNIX open source scripting languages a little faster and slightly cheaper than Windows.
There are a few sub-functions of the operating system that may be of importance to you.
Need a virtual private server? This gives you a dedicated operating system virtual self to all that instead of sharing with others operating system. Even sharing a computer with others, but there are more stringent in their walls place to ensure the bandwidth, CPU and memory, even if a web site on the same machine is badly beaten. It also gives great configuration options However, since it is its own operating system. These packages are more expensive than the options for sharing, but worthwhile if your site grows. Mainly VPS packages vary is the amount RAM dedicated to you, so I recommend going with the smaller package and monitor the usage of RAM over time and improvement in a larger package, as necessary.
Need a dedicated SSL certificate? Most sites offer a shared SSL certificate, which is fine for some sites small, but if you run an ecommerce site in the medium or large requires a special certificate. Some buyers justifiably not send its staff and information Credit card without a valid warranty certificate private SSL. Also, some shopping cart applications that the certificate is also dedicated. Be careful Shopping for this - some hosting services say they are giving an SSL certificate with all hosting plans, but not explicitly say that it is a certificate shared If the plan does not include. a dedicated IP, then it is a shared certificate.
To remotely administer directly on your site, you may need either in UNIX shell or Windows Remote Desktop. UNIX option is sometimes referred to as Shell SSH, Secure Shell, or telnet. These options are only useful if you think make low-level maintenance and adjustment, especially in VPS packages. With a good hosting package with a panel of high-power control, you will not need any of these.
You can see to mention the ability to schedule cron jobs -.. This is the version of UNIX for scheduled tasks This capability is only necessary whether to run scheduled tasks at set times, such as a backup every night Most control panels provide a good interface for job entry cron, but also provide interfaces to perform maintenance tasks such as backups. You probably do not need this feature.
2. Web Server
Web hosting companies usually offer UNIX Microsoft IIS or Apache web servers. Both have their pros and less, and will only a difference to you if the website is in development or application that is running requires one or the other. Apache, open source still has slightly better hooks on it to run many open source systems management and other blog content based on PHP, Perl and Python, so go with Apache if that's all what you need. The Windows IIS also has very good systems of open source content management and blog engines based on ASP and ASP.Net, but I do not recommend going a PHP / Perl / Python on Windows IIS web application - see discussion above operating system why.
The SSL certificate is hosted by web server and web server has to perform additional processing of HTTPS SSL applications - has to encrypt / decrypt and verify the data passing between client and server For this reason, some might argue that they should shy away from web hosting packages that. free offer shared SSL certificate for all. You could end sharing a server with 100s of other sites that overload the server. A well managed website will only enter into HTTPS SSL mode for the current input card credit, not the entire web site - but do not know if other web sites on the server are well managed.
3. Bandwidth
This is a measure of the amount of data transmitted from the input / output web page, usually on a monthly basis. Note that a typical Web page only transmits a very small amount of content to each user, although a package only offered a few gigs of transfer a month, most likely not reach beyond their allotment. If it does, then your website is very popular among the thousands of visitors, and you should be generating a nice income stream. Most of web hosting companies explained what the penalty is to exceed their allocation - it is usually a dollar to two per show, making it cheaper to upgrade the package immediately above, of course, if your site is heavy on images. or multimedia, you may need a larger allocation of monthly bandwidth immediately. Fortunately, all offer a monthly meter for their use of bandwidth, so you can plan accordingly as your site grows in popularity.
Some companies hosting package offer unlimited bandwidth - be careful with this there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth. so what is sold flat rate bandwidth. Many of them with flat-rate offers will tell you after purchasing an account of what is acceptable use policy is concerning bandwidth and disk space, not allowing performance 500gig nightly backups of your PC and activities. In fact, many of these policies also stipulate that you must upgrade. At large packages if your site begins to violate the bandwidth of others in a shared hosting machine, once again, this is not a bad policy, if you receive a notice of violation to the activity of your website, then it is so popular that its revenue stream covers the additional expense of a larger package.
4. Disk Space
This is the allocation of bytes on the hard disk given to you for your website. A great website with 100s of pages may easily fit in a gigabyte of space, so they do not really need much of a typical website. If your website has a catalog of thousands of items for sale, stored in a database with several images each, then you will have a major upgrade in disk space. Generally, as your site grows in popularity and content, which will be upgrading the bandwidth first, and more disk space along with the updated package.
Some hosting companies include database space and email space for this allocation of disk space, so the plan according to how to separate space.
As it was with bandwidth, many web hosting providers offer unlimited space, and there is no such thing as unlimited space. What they are selling is flat fee of disk space, with an acceptable use policy. It is difficult to break its terms acceptable to a normal web site, just to make something out of the common, such as accommodation and anonymous FTP site fake files.
5. Domains
This is the number of web addresses that can point in their web hosting account. Almost all providers offer subdomains, where his main site is YourSite.com and has www.YourSite.com and files.YourSite.com subdomains. Many will allow you to point externally hosted DNS entries noted in your wallet s account, but others do not. This can be called Add-on domains, and most offered in one of several additional packages on the domains. This allows you to purchase additional domains and point to a separate folder within your hosted account. This way you can run several web sites that appear unrelated, which is physically located and operated together.
Many hosting providers websites offer a single or even multiple free domains with their accounts. Some sites even offer free life, saving you $ 10 a year for the domain. Make sure you buy this option if you want to save a few dollars a year.
6. Email
Almost all providers web hosting offer email accounts, which gives an e-mail address YourName@YourSite.com. Most of them also offer mail electronic web-based POP and IMAP, and spam filtering. Where they differ is in the number of email accounts they offer, the total space on disc or by mail, and advanced features such as managing email on the list. It depends on you as to the importance of email is for you and its website - there are a lot of email providers on the internet so this has never been a major feature set for me.
Many Site hosting providers offer unlimited e-mail messages, but again there is no such thing. As they grow up email accounts, bandwidth, and space used disk will grow, and none of them is unlimited. So finally break their acceptable use policies and are forced to upgrade to a larger package big - again, not a bad thing if your website is growing and generating income for you.
7. FTP
FTP is the protocol file transfer used to send and receive files to and from your website. This feature may or may not be important to you, depending on whether you want the files the server to the anonymous people through this protocol. Most websites today deliver the files via HTTP through its website, which allows you to manage access and users through its website instead of through FTP accounts.
8. Database
A database is a server package data structures in one easy to store and retrieve the form. The database is one of the components used to create dynamic websites as content management systems and blog engines. You have to take advantage of the database as well if you intend to create any type of commerce website address to store your user information, catalogs of items for sale, and orders. Separation of applications at different levels database is important.
MSSQL is available on most Windows hosting packages, but usually a little more expensive, because their restrictions on commercial licensing, and usually has fewer cases and the available disk space. However, some web applications are designed to take advantage of its feature set, so it may take this as the database. You could take advantage of MySQL with as many applications as you can, no any reason, a single website can not use several different databases.
MSAccess database is available for Windows that open is more of a database file-level data and not a dedicated server running. Provide appropriate storage for the database using lighter, but not sufficient for any system for large data storage needs.
Investigate the needs of applications intended to run on your website, and planning requirements for each database, it leads to the conclusion that the hosting package to use based on these needs database.
9. Control Panel
The control panel is the location that will manage every detail of your web hosting account. All providers give a panel of web-based control is easy to use and provide enough help to understand all functions, so you can avoid calling them for help.
The web hosting providers may vary in the type of control panel they offer, however. The two main control panels cPanel and Plesk, which are found in about 80% suppliers. The remaining 20% will give a measure of the integrated control panel. CPanel and Plesk are so popular because they provide feature rich services management the right of the box and both can be branded to appear as the supplier of home pages, but are expensive to license. Both work on UNIX and Windows hosted accounts and allow complete management of the underlying operating system configuration, web server setup, configuration, Web site, e-mail FTP, DNS, etc.
If you're new to web hosting, then it really does not matter to choose control panel, but if you are familiar with cPanel or Plesk may prefer to go with a hosting provider that offers the control panel you feel comfortable.
If you are interested in entering a reseller of hosting, then you'll want to ensure you get the licenses provided by your reseller account through the web hosting provider, so you can brand it and give your sub-hosted customers (and not have to call the configuration needs).
Many on the internet recommend removing your cPanel and Plesk virtual private server, and both can be more bandwidth, CPU, and disk space hogs. One of the great advantages of a virtual private server is to be able to login as root or administrator and management operating system and web server directly, eliminating the need to hide in a web interface these tasks. Of course it would be much more Technical interested in doing these tasks yourself, or you could pay a few dollars more per month and get a VPS package management.
10. Applications / Programming
No matter what type of website you plan to build, will most likely use some pre-built packages as the basis your site. Prebuilt packages are built with any programming or scripting language. May be using PHP, Perl, Python, Java, Ruby, ASP, ASP.Net, or Coldfusion. Most of these languages will run on any operating system, except for ASP and ASP.Net, which are the Microsoft technologies that require windows (And probably requires the application of database IIS and MSSQL as well.) PHP, Perl, Python, and Java are multiplatform, but UNIX that runs a bit faster than Windows and usually a package a bit cheaper. Ruby is a UNIX only, and may be referred to as Ruby on Rails. Not all web hosting providers give access in all languages with all their packages - make sure you shop carefully to ensure the reception and purchase package that has the required language.
Applications who choose to run will tell you what their needs are. In fact, the web hosting provider will give you the tools necessary to install the applications of control panel which makes it a breeze to get started with the installation base of any application you choose. These days all web hosting providers to lift and running with the base installation of the most common blog engines and content management systems in minutes after purchase.
If you are interested in a blog, read by WordPress and BlogEngine.Net. If you are interested in a content management system, read about Joomla, Drupal, DotNetNuke, and mojoPortal. For a message board, read about PHPBB and applications YetAnotherForum. There are many more pre-built applications to help you get started as shopping carts, management mailing list, web, editing tools, and catalog databases.
Conclusion
I hope this article provides enough knowledge to make a wise decision to select a network hosting package. Happy shopping!

Reverse IP address of a website does not have admin access?
Someone in one of my forums I post at (is phpBB) states that he can check the IP address of visitors and has verified a poster is actually an alias for another poster. As far as I know, he does not have access to administrator or moderator. My understanding is that he should not be able to see the IP address that later. Can anyone shed light on this? Is there a way to do this without mod or access administrator? The matter is of some concern, because if somehow it has cut into the table, it means he can access the account information private. (The web site has several thousand credit card on file) is a common forum, not a term I myself. I have no administrator privileges.
Check the obvious things first ... alias as the person using the same email and have similar information on their profiles. That could tip someone off two user names are the same person. Apart from that, there may be a flaw in phpBB. Make sure your copy of phpBB is current. Personally, I would suggest switching to SimpleMachines Forum [SMF]. I felt a lot better than phpBB in many respects. I changed any forum that was running phpBB SMF and I will not return. That said, I have not tried to phpBB 3.
